Linux Mint comes in a variety of desktop type environments.   The Mate and Cinnamon desktops are the most popular and practical for most general purpose needs:  

The Mate desktop needs a computer with very moderate hardware requirements and is very similar in operation to Windows XP, Vista, 7.  Most easiest to switch over from a Windows environment.  We personally use the Mate desktop until this day because of the ease of use and the straightforward similar style of Windows.  

The Cinnamon desktop requires a bit more of a powerful computer to run smoothly.  It to has a similar desktop menu and style of Windows with many more multimedia widgets associated with it.  If you are looking for more of a flashier desktop like wobbly windows, this is the one for you.
